Despite all of the negative publicity about real estate these days, vineyard land continues to be a strong investment due to the relative scarcity of land suitable for growing wine grapes. The prices of land in California have sky-rocketed so high that it's difficult for a new vintner to purchase land there. What we are starting to see is a movement of experienced wineries expanding their businesses to include other states, including affordable Arizona. Dick Erath of Erath Vineyards in Oregon has purchased land in Willcox, Arizona to continue his legacy. He believes Arizona has the potential for growth that he saw in Oregon 30 years ago. The least expensive land (at this time) to grow grapes is in the Sulphur Springs Valley - including Kansas Settlement and Willcox. Surprisingly, some of the local wine experts believe the Willcox Bench area to be one of the best areas to grow wine grapes in all of Arizona - the location boasts great, fertile soils, the elevation is high enough to allow a great swing in daytime to nighttime temperatures and it is high enough to serve as a buffer to the devastating frost that can be experienced less than a mile away.

Peter and Judith Lechtenbohmer established this vineyard in 1997. Peter previously had a professional data processing career in the 1970’s and 1980’s when he became interested in growing grapes. In the 1980’s, he was the owner and manager of Desert Sweet Vineyards in Maricopa, Arizona. The vineyard produced and marketed the first Organic Seedless Table Grapes from the low desert of Arizona near Phoenix. When the large bank for which he worked was sold, he moved to the Willcox area, where he had previously purchased land in 1984 for the purpose of one day growing wine grapes…..his dream. At that time, he studied soil and elevation maps for nearly a year before making that one decision. He then moved onto his land when the bank career disappeared. Since 1997, Peter has developed one of the finest estate wine grape vineyards in the Southwest. He has made small amounts of wine for four years and continues to expand his Tuscan-styled vineyard on 20 acres. The varieties grown currently are Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Malvasia, Syrah and Zinfandel. He currently sells most of his premium fruit to other wineries in Arizona. Because of health issues and their children who live in Texas, Peter and Judy have decided to sell their dream and move to Texas to be closer to family. It was a hard decision to make.
